Previously you simply had to assert that you did not have the funds to pay the publication charge and you were granted waiver. Why am I publishing it anyway? Is it to advance science or simply the careers of me and my co-authors?

This policy, of expecting an author to pay, seems contrary to the original PLoS One policy of publishing all science and could distort the science that is being published. You indicated that you will be sending supporting financial documentation with your application.

The last time I was funded by a grant was Since then I have had two students funded by UK research councils and two Marie Curie fellows funded by the European Community, but I receive no funds outside those associated with these projects - the paper I have submitted to PLoS One was written with two undergraduate students.

The only evidence I can offer of this lack of grants is the lack of grant acknowledgements in papers I have published in the last few years. I fully appreciate that PLoS One needs money to function, and I am also very grateful for the complete and partial fee waivers that PLoS has given me in the past, but I simply have no funds.

I cannot provide a grant statement for a grant that ended over 5 years ago; the university changed their accounting system and terminated grants were not transferred. Furthermore, neither this grant, nor any other grant I have ever had, would provide support for this project, which is unrelated to any of my former research except for one paper published by PLoS Biology, which was incidentally granted a full waiver. You suggest that I should provide details of my personal financial position and from this I presume from this that if I am judged to be personally wealthy enough, then I will be required to pay the publication fee.

How small does my bank balance have to be before I am judged to be personally unable to pay? Motivation: A total review time of 5. When the first round of edits are purely editorial, one might expect that the AE would make the call at that point rather than sending the manuscript out for a second round. When the second round of reviews consists of one review with comments that were addressed in under an hour by a find-and-replace and the addition of a single line to the text such that the manuscript was resubmitted within hours of receiving the "reviews", the AE should certainly make the call at that point.

When the third round of reviews consist of no comments, one might start to wonder about the purpose of the second and third rounds of review. Personally, I started wondering if our bacteria had evolved since the initial submission, and were no longer considered part of the genus.

The one positive was that the invoice arrived in my inbox days after acceptance. Incredibly efficient! Well done, PLoS One. Motivation: The reviewer commented that the results are over-interpreted and the conclusions are not supported by data. However, the reviewer didn't offer reason. Motivation: I submitted my manuscript and the initial process was very slow.

Eventually I received a rejection. However that decision was based on the comments from 1 reviewer and it was apparent that the paper was not read, nor were the comments about the content of the submission nor were the reasons for rejection, logical. Consequently I appealed the decision. That was a mistake because it took an additional 7 months to get a decision.

I would get periodic emails apologizing for the delays indicating that a decision would come soon. Eventually following numerous email exchanges, I demanded that a decision be made. A week later the paper was rejected based on the opinion of one reviewer.

Having published numerous papers over the years I was disappointed but can accept the decisions. However no paper should take 10 months from submission to final decision, and one would expect that if reviews come back that are poor themselves, an additional reviewer would be identified.Nice to see PLOS's stated mission in action: "to accelerate progress in science and medicine by leading a transformation in research communication".

Thanks a lot Open Access. Perlstein eperlste January 21, Needless to say, my motivation for finishing the revisions waned. These people value science for science, and not where it happens to be published. DistribEcology I can't say you're wrong, but Where is the wrong measure of paper and slows down science.

Some of us like plosone on a CV. The answer is actually relatively simple. I thought it would be the best venue for my paper. The best place to get it read by the people I wanted to read it. My paper is about general models of allometric scaling how organism properties and processes, like metabolism change with size, and how we should view these in really variable ecosystems like savannas.

I think allometric scaling is pretty cool because it is one of the few things in ecology that appears to be somewhat universal across diverse taxa. As such, several general models have been developed often based on physical first principles and assumptions regarding natural selection that make testable predictions for how organisms trees in my case should vary with size. Instead, it is more likely the theory is incomplete, and necessarily so since it is attempting to be general.

So, I submitted the paper to Ecology. And waited.

For over three months. Until the decision finally came from the editor: rejected. Absolutely rejected. No major reviews and then resubmit. It was pretty clear they did not want my paper. But, I then had to decide where to submit next.

After taking care of the technical issues brought up in the Ecology reviews, my co-authors and I started discussing where to submit next. We started thinking about the next tier of ecology journals things like Functional Ecologybut none seemed to provide the right fit.

Even though it would have been a great fit content-wise, I wanted a more diverse audience.
